Report Of Boat In Distress, Passengers Yelling 'We Need Help' Draws Quick Response In Stamford

A late night boating expedition wound up resulting in a scare before first responders in Stamford could make the save of a drifting boat.

The Stamford Emergency Communications Center received an emergency call at approximately 11:20 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, from residents at the Palmer Landing condo complex reporting that there was a vessel in distress in the water with its passengers shouting “we need help,” Fire Capt. Philip Hayes said

Firefighters were dispatched near the hurricane barrier in the Stamford Harbor, along with Stamford EMS and members of the Stamford Police Department. A City of Stamford Fire Boat arrived at the scene as well, where they found a 40-foot boat that was having engine issues.

Crew members on the rescue boat were able to reach the operator of the broken down boat, and assisted them to a dock.

Hayes said that the occupants on the boat said they’d been drifting for approximately an hour. Officials noted that the vessel in distress was undamaged and simply had engine problems.

First responders were cleared to leave the scene in less than an hour, at 11:52 p.m.
